Our vision for the MDCHS API Club is to create a community for students to learn and become aware of Asian and Pacific Islander culture through cultural events, guest speakers, and community service. We want students to learn more about Asian and Pacific Islander culture.
Throughout the year, we can host API Food Night (potluck/teaching students how to make easy API dishes) and teach students API games/dances (mahjong, mancala, tinikling, hula, poi balls, chinese yo-yo and jump-rope).
Our club can virtually host guest speakers over zoom (parents/teachers) sharing their stories of coming to the United States or different aspects of their culture, we can teach different languages (Tagalog), provide virtual trips to different campuses, and create short club leader videos teaching about API culture (making traditional food)
Our club could host a donation drive for food/clothes (balikbayan) to be sent to the Philippines. Last year, the Saint Augustine’s Fil-Am Club coordinated a balikbayan box challenge with us and other schools; if they do it again this year we will join in. If not, our club members could write letters for the Letters2OurKupuna organization or the Hawaii Health Harm Reduction Center, which sends those letters to elderly/people isolated due to COVID-19 in Hawaii.
